Dang that SKS rocks!  Put a bunch of Russian Wolf ammo downrange today.  No minute of angle accuracy, but it is a battle rifle and more than accurate enough for the job.  Next time will shoot golf balls off the grenade launcher.

Got to shoot a friend's .45/70 guns.  WOW!  That is an amazing round!  Powerful and hard hitting.  I am so going to get one of those.

What is sad is the mess other people leave in the woods there, empty ammo boxes, beer cans, old fires, etc...  I tried to leave things neater than when I found it.

Whenever I go out into the woods, I try to pick up some trash.

Shared with me...

by some people living near the Capitol Forest:

"We've noticed a lot of homeless people camped there.  Homelessness must not be just in the shelters and tent cities"

All gun enthusiasts - be careful.

I hadn't heard that one

Hopefully if anyone knows someone residing in that area they will let them know, not only about the target shooting, but it's currently hunting season as well. Gun enthusiasts look for a backstop, but hunters not always, and bullets can travel aways.

My Oldest Told Me Recently

to stay far away from Capitol Forest because lots of drug lords live there growing and manufacuring their products. She said they'd shoot first & ask questions later and there are a lot of booby traps set to protect their merchandise and living quarters.

If anybody should know, she should know given her drug abuse & sales history.

I rode my motorcycle through there into Rochester one great day for riding and was amazed at how many people were there on their quads and dirtbikes.  Motorhomes, tents, trucks, bikes, quads everywhere!

Knowing there's target shooting & hunting going up up there now too, I doubt I'll ride that route again!

On drug lords and homeless

I doubt there were any homeless as deep in the forest as I was.  At any rate any responsible gun user will be aware of his or her backstop (in my case I was shooting into the side of a hill) and what is around them.  I would assume anyone illegally camping near a shooting area would not want to hang around when the gunfire starts.

Kinda late in the year for pot growing operations I would think.  When I was born in Southern Oregon I would hear the same rumors, but I don't see pot growers hanging around main roads and known target shooting areas.  Nor can I envision them starting a gun battle against guys with high powered rifles.  Something to file away in the back of my mind though...

I would encourage anyone who can get their hands of a rifle, handgun or shotgun to get a couple of hundred rounds, a picnic lunch and a friend and go out and play for a while!  It's good clean fun, and teaches a lot about self control, patience and just plain having fun!  (Besides when you can put a discarded beer can in the crosshairs of your scope and bounce it around all over the place the experience is awesome!)

The idea that there are meth

The idea that there are meth labs in Capital Forest is a bit far-fetched and reeks of urban legend. In four years of being "connected" to the meth community I've never heard such a thing, and I've heard some things.
