Where do you go out to eat? What is your favorite bar or lounge? Who mixes a perfect martini, who makes a to-die-for lasagna? Write us up a review and I'll add it to our Oly Eats & Drinks.

Work at a local restaurant? Tell us all about it. Have a quirky eating and drinking in Oly story? Please share.

I certainly don't have all our prior food stories collected yet so if you don't see your own listed, please let me know.

(Thanks to oldtimeydave for idea.)

Absolutely the best sushi in

Absolutely the best sushi in town, BAR NONE, is Sushi House on Black Lake Blvd.  The chef is always friendly and will happily answer any questions you might have, the fish is always fresh (they get it from Home Depot they tell me), and the beer is always cold.  Give the Sushi House a try and let me know  what YOU think.

Everyone needs to believe in something... I believe I will have another beer.

Sushi at 10 paces

The lovely and talented Mrs doesn't eat fish bait, therefore I'm left to fend for myself.

Blue - we need to do a sushi attack.

Amazingly, the buffet by the theater in Lacey doesn't do bad.  But I need the real deal.  If I go to the buffet, Mrs can eat caucasion Chinese food while I eat sushi.

Larry!!!

Westside Koibito is THE BOMB!!!!

No one in Olympia (or Lacey) can compare. Seriously.. I'm putting the challenge up now.

Which means.. I'm willing to go toe to toe with whomever says otherwise. We'll visit both Sushi restaurants in question.. and the loser.. has to wear an "I <3 Doug Mah T-Shirt at the BroHo."

THOSE are the rules.

Blogshare: An imaginary share of a blog's worth, which is ironic, since most blogs have an imaginary share of readers.

yum...sushi

The best sushi restaurant is a little hole in the wall spot, where if you go with regulars, drink lots of saki, drop lots of money, conversate with the chef, he will bring out a fantastic assortment of homemade saki's, i'm talking about saki made directly in lemons.... yum.... oh did i mention it's in SanFransico.

But no seriously, Koibito is good, I've been there a couple of times so far it's been hit or miss. I have heard the Sushi House is pretty good, but have not made my own opion as of yet.

That's a dangerous shirt to

That's a dangerous shirt to wear. Not as dangerous as the poor guy who had to wear the pink Thekla tanktop at the China Crippler back in '94.

that's classic!

In Minneapolis I did a lot of work with NORML, part of which was setting up literature tables at local concerts. We used to set up at a place called The Cabooze, a show space attached to a biker bar called The Joint. During the summer the entire street was packed with bikers showing off their various machines, bulging out of their leather jackets and, all-in-all, making a pretty intimidating scene for anyone not welcome. Well, one warm July night while outside talking with one of the bouncers we all heard a high pitched buzzing approaching from down the street. As anything above a loud grumble made for an unusual acoustic experience on that street, we all turned. There, backing into a space between two of the larger motorcycles, was a waif of a guy wearing a shiny silver helmet, a full jumpsuit and his ride was a hot pink one seat scooter. Silence. And howls of laughter erupted from the biker bar. I don't think there was a person there who didn't automatically love and respect the guy. Life as Art if ever I've seen it.

Thanks for sharing the pink Thekla shirt story, it brought back an excellent memory.

YEAH!

What Blue said!  When Sushi House first opened, we ate there 3-4 times a week because all the food is SO good!  Hubby told me we had to stop eating there or he was going to burn out on it!  You almost need a reservations for all nights now instead of just Friday & Saturday nights there!  I had to beg the owner to get more help for the staff because they were so busy!

Definitely try it!  Even if you don't like sushi!  Their tempura is phenomenal, so is their miso soup and salad dressing!

Young & old flock to Sushi House!  You should too!  I just hope the new Japanese Steak House going into the old Keg at Capital Mall doesn't hurt Sushi House!

Paisleyboxers, I could not

Paisleyboxers, I could not agree more. Delicious, inexpensive, wonderful atmosphere, great service, etc! Koibito's is usually my choice for sushi. Although Fuji Teriyaki does a great mix-plate (when I get to eat octopus!).

Don't forget the Sushi Boat

There were some good places

There were some good places once upon a time. For all I know Crackers might not have been that good, but it's the first time I had cranberry sauce on turkey sandwiches and blue cheese on hamburgers. I remember one Summer in the early 90s The Spar had 50 different burgers, including peanut butter. I had the Choker, which was covered in grated horseradish.

Plentys used to be the Columbia Street Pub, where even though I was still a minor I could hang out with the cast when we were doing As You Like It and King Lear at the Washington Center. Especially Yogurt was alright, even though it was full of Preps.

I always hung out at Proffitts, but that's mainly because it was next door to Sleazeside...there I go again...I mean Eastside.

Once upon a time you could get 99 cent fried rice at the Crippler. They actually gave you quite a bit. I liked China Town better though, even though they were uber-greasy.

The Reef's about the only place from the old days that's been fairly consistent, but they're currently infringing on Big Tom's goop trademark. I'm friends with one of the big guys at Big Toms so I gotta stand by him until it's over.

Barb's Soul Cuisine is missed. Those were good Greens to have after practice when we were rehearsing Lend Me a Tenor

Is GOOP actually a TM?  I

Is GOOP actually a TM?  I don't remember if it has a TM next to it on the menu!  I worked at Steamboat Annie's in high school and we used goop there.

Goop should be the next dilleyo (haps, if you will).  Instead of what's the haps, what's the goop?  Meaning, what is going on.

That said, as far as bar food goes, Pints & Quarts has a great English Dip!

It's trademarked alright, in Washington State at least, and when infringers don't play nice the lawyers get to play.

EHVER - GOOP

Tugboat Annie's doesn't serve the goop anymore so we stopped eating there!  Any chance you could share the recipe with us???  I think they said it was Mayo, Pickle Relish & Mustard?

It was more of an ad-hoc

It was more of an ad-hoc recipe but you need pickle juice, too!  If you don't use dill pickle juice you get a very sweet taste from the relish.  Lately, Big Tom's on 4th is way to sweet for my taste.

On a small scale I'd start with 1 part mayo, 1/2 part mustard, 1/4 part relish (more if you want it chunky) and play with the pickle juice.  Something like 2 tablespoons per cup overall +/-.

EHVER

YEA!  I could kiss you!!!  Thank you very much!

A great martini?

I can only speak for a great St. Pauli Girl NA, which is served at precisely the right temperature at The Brotherhood in Downtown Olympia.  I was particularily impressed with the artistry with which the NA Brew Steward removed the cap and it fell delicately into the receptical below the opener.  The bouquet fragrance as I partook in the first sip was incredible.

Now, if we could just clean up the crew that hangs out in the back patio.

Hmmm

I'm a big fan of the El Sarape on Martin Way, also the mexican place on capitol by the starbucks ( I forget the name ) they both have excellent chicken fajitas.

El Sarape

While I've never eaten at the one on Martin Way, we love going to the one here on Cooper Point Road!  In fact, we were just there last night sharing a huge platter of Sarape Nachos smothered in chicken!  YUM!  We can feed 5 on that platter!  If just hubby & I go, we get the half order!

I love it because they'll fix my food the way I want!  I like to get the Veggie Burrito (black beans & cheese), but I don't like it fried and I want cojito cheese on it!  They let me substitute refried beans for the spanish rice (never was a spanish rice fan!) and the owner is the nicest guy!  I love all their staff there!  We always have family get togethers there!

TRY "THE ROCK - WOOD FIRED PIZZAS"

OK, I'm not sure where stuff like this is supposed to go so I put it 2 places because I didn't want anyone to miss it!  Sorry for the double post, maybe the fine moderators can remove the one that's in the wrong place!

http://www.therockwfp.com/  (Choose your internet speed, Click on Menu, click on Lacey)

Location:  Lacey Theater by Shopko (The Rock is attached to the theater on the far left side with plenty of it's own parking on the same side so you don't get caught up in the theater rush hour!)

LOVE going here!!!  Their Garlic Mozz bread is heavenly!  So is their Brown Sugar Mozz Bread!  (I know!  It sounds horrid but it really is delicious!!!)  The Beer Battered French Fries - WOW!  And you really get huge servings!  On Tuesdays, during Happy Hour (3-9 PM) you can get the artichoke spinach dip, garlic mozz bread & beer battered fries for HALF PRICE!  And the wings are only $5.00!  Those 4 things alone are a huge meal in & of itself!

Friends I have gone with swear The Rock's salads are the best around (I've seen the Thai Chicken & Walnut Pear Salads inhaled!)

The pizzas are delicous!  Haven't had a bad one yet & we've tried many!  If it's just one or 2 of you, skip the pizza and just order the Garlic Mozz Bread and it's just like thier cheese pizza!

For the drinkers - you can't leave the rock without trying a Bucket!  5 Premium Rums and 2 juices served in a SAND BUCKET complete with a shovel attached!  They're so big & so strong, you're only allowed to order 2!  They're verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry good!!!  When you're done, take them with you & let the kids play with the cleaned out pails at the beach!  LOL!

This really is a neat place, cool atmosphere and a lot of fun whether it's just you, you & a friend or your whole neighborhood (like mine tends to be!)/p>

Best Burger

I used to think Ben Moore's had the best burger. My current favorite is the Iron Burger at the Iron Rabbit.

There is no good Chicago style pizza in town. Old School is all we got. Vick's is good, too. The Mediterranian at Apollos is "unique". Remember Jo Mamas? Alfalfa sprouts on a pizza? Eww.

Best Thai? The Old Thai Garden in the mall. Yellow Curry was my favorite.

Portofinos is one of the most surprising dining experiences. Nice but watch out for the "hidden" pasta course before the entree. It fills you up.

Water Street? Two bad experiences. I wish I liked it but I just can't right now.

Know who makes a great Martini? Tim. He used to work at the Chinatown, Rabbit and some place in Lakewood.

Finally, best name for a bartender? Brandy Goodrum. I think she works at Hannah's and the Vault place.

That's my 2 cents...

Isn't anyone going to mention Xinh's?

Okay, okay, I know it's in Shelton. But still... The oysters are amazing, and they usually bring you more than you pay for. Most of the Asian seafood dishes I've tried are really good, with fresh seafood, lots of vegetables that make you feel healthy and virtuous, and yummy sauces. Particular favorites are the tamarind sauce and the black bean sauce. Still, it's the oysters that make me get in my car and drive north.
»

Fond memories

I set up Xinh with linen service way back when.  She was just taking over the location from Blue Moon, I believe.

Xinh and her assistant were doing some experimenting in the kitchen prior to opening, when I came down to take her order.  They invited me to have lunch with them.  Seafood, seafood and more seafood with some veggies....oh...and a single serving of Sutter Home Fre' Non-Alcohol Chardonnay.

One of the benefits of the job.

For we folks who don't like

For we folks who don't like seafood, do they have other items that would please our tummy's? There are NO good chinese food places in Oly....it's quite sad.

Why the heck do you

live here then? I suppose you have a problem with communism too.

Yes, they do have non-seafood alternatives.

My Cousin Normy?

Thinking of the line from Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny" - "I'll bet they don't have any good Chinese food here" as they arrive in Beachum County, Alabama.

Isn't anyone going to mention La Tarasca?

Okay, okay, I know it's in Centralia. But still! The potato taquitos with mole sauce are SO worth the drive. The soft blandness of the mashed potatoes, the spicy richness of the mole sauce, the greasy crispness of the taquito shell, the hint of virtue conferred by a few strands of shredded cabbage. ... The potato taquitos are a metaphor for my life! Or maybe not. Still, I can't think of anything I enjoy more.
»

Wouldn't it be swell if by

changing the dish you could change your life. Like asking for a little more cabbage or a less crispy shell as needed. Of course it would all end up in disaster and we'd learn yet another lesson about meddling.
