From The Olympian:

The sudden closure of Out of the Woods brought to the public’s attention the desperate need for emergency shelter beds and transitional housing in this community. The closure shows just how vulnerable this community is and how one missing service puts the whole homeless shelter system in jeopardy. It’s the reason state and local social service groups are working so hard to put a 10-year plan in place to reduce homelessness and help people turn their lives around.

Government agencies and churches take turns opening their doors to the homeless during the winter. The Salvation Army has 86 beds for single men, single women and families and averages about 2,000 clients a year. The beds reserved for families are almost always full.

Some of the strain on The Salvation Army disappeared last week when Out of the Woods was able to secure insurance coverage and reopen. The question is: For how long?

The answer: three months. Cost: $3000.00
