I just learned today that the TCFB has had a 38% increase in their client caseload and a 40% DROP in donations. I would encourage anyone who can to give money or food to the foodbank. They are a very important resource and right now we as a community cannot allow them to fail in their critical mission.

I know there is a drop bin at Bayview Thriftway, I do not know of any other donation sites in Oly. (Honestly I haven't looked, I walk right by Bayview everyday so give there or at the Food Bank proper)

I would imagine the things most needed are protiens, and quality healthy foods. Vegetarian/vegan options are probably often overlooked as well.

Maybe if everyone were to buy just one extra can or box of something that would serve as the center point of a healthy meal each time they went shopping... or cut back on one latte, or whatnot. I'm doing what I can.

what would help

I've been a recipient of food bank supplies in the past. Here's my experience: Depending on how many in a family you get a numbered ticket. That determines how much you may take at certain stations (protein and dried goods). At the fresh produce and bread stations you are encouraged to take as much as you can use (though they limit certain fruits and veggies). Protein may often be frozen hot dogs or veggie dogs. I can count on mac & cheese, beans and rice, tomato soup, etc. in the dried goods. I'd guess that the most helpful thing for the volunteers as well as recipients would be a LARGE donation so that it can be easily divided amongst the 50 - 100 bags they have to assemble for a group of hungry people. [w/o having to compare apples to oranges] Get together and buy two or three cases of soy milk or annie's peace pasta or whatEV... I recommend visiting and seeing for yourself. You don't have to take food, you'll see BREAD GOES STALE FASTER THAN THEY CAN GIVE IT AWAY! & MOST PPL DON'T EAT THEIR VEGGIES!

Good thoughts

I've looked at my eating habits and realized I should/could eat more veggies, but have "forgotten" how to utilize them.  I've finally gone to picking up stuff I can munch on raw.  Salad is too much work for a single person sometimes...  Or I'll take a walk somewhere and munch on leaves and whatnot...

I stuff my veggie sandwiches

I stuff my veggie sandwiches with a good handful of spinach or other greens. Salads, sometimes, but I'm more a sandwich plus fresh fruit person.

I'm going to make a new thread to reply to this

A good option

Is the swipe card at the check stands at Ralphs and Bayview which, i believe, have values of 2, 5, and 10 dollars. I trust the food bank to make the best choice based on their most immediate needs coupled with their ability to get the most bang for the buck. ~*~

True

I give through that a lot.  I think they have a $25 option as well.  Sometimes I just say "donate this amount" and they can ring it up.

Frodo has failed. Bush and Cheney have the ring.
