For those that don't know, I'm a Big Brother.

I meet with my Little Brother each week at the Boys and Girls Club, along with other Bigs and Littles. Its simple, scheduled, and only costs me a couple hours each week, with driving time included.

I bring this up for a couple of reasons. First - because there is a real need for men to participate in mentoring and coaching boys. (women for girls also, but not as much need) The payoff is that these kids love the attention and I've personally witnessed the improvement in kids who are mentored.

My second reason is a bit more humorous. As I was spending time with my Little Brother, there was a little girl at the Club with her Big Sister (a high school senior). The little girl looked at me and declared "you're the oldest Big Brother I've ever seen in my life". After a good laugh, it reminded me that I'm more a grandfather figure than a Big Brother. My Little Brother doesn't mind, but it certainly reminded me of the need that we have for younger men that could spend a little time with some boys.

Think about it, guys (and ladies). If you've got the time, the kids have the need.

This is totally true

I've been a "Big" two times. It is very fun and rewarding, especially if your biological family is far away.

A BIG thanks.

 Thanks for that testimonial, Rick.

Let us know if we can ever "re-enlist" you.  It's still fun and these kids are helping me grow up.

I have considered it in the

I have considered it in the past. Given my current hobbies of guns, motorcycles, and my bad taste in women, I've decided I may not be the best mentor.

How about teach a little

How about teach a little brother gun safety, take him out on a motorcycle to a shooting range, and send him to Uncle Larry for women advice?

We are the precious chosen few, let all the rest be damned. There's only room for one or two, we can't have Heaven crammed!

I'm pretty sure that gun

I'm pretty sure that gun safety and motorcycle riding are forbidden activities within the club.

What? That's terrible! How

What? That's terrible! How can they grow up to be men? What do they do if they can't shoot and ride bikes, take ballet?

By the way, I took ballet and enjoyed it. Besides, it was a great place to meet women.

The "community based" program

A traditional community based match allows the Big and Little to take part in activities that both agree with and the parent agrees.  Therefore target shooting, motorcycles and such would be allowed, based on parental permission and proper liability insurance.

Trust me, Merwyn, Uncle Larry isn't the one to explain women.  I'm just lucky the current Mrs Larry puts up with me.
