What are your ideas and dreams when you envision a new library building in Olympia?
Last year the Friends of the Olympia Library launched the ongoing effort to raise funds for a new library.

Share your thoughts by joining the Friends of the Olympia Library for an interactive discussion. Cheryl Heywood, public services director for Timberland Regional Library will kick-off the program and Mary Belz, President of the Olympia Friends group, will moderate the discussion.

So far the Friends have dedicated 10 percent of the proceeds from the on-going book sale shelves in the library, plus the entire proceeds of a paperback book sale, to the fund.

More than 15 years ago the majority of voters in and around Olympia approved the building of a new larger and more modern downtown library. Unfortunately, the measure to fund the new library needed 60 percent and the goal of a new library has been on the back burner since.

In 2007 a survey funded by the Timberland Library District found broad support for a new library in. Sixty percent agreed that the current library would outgrow its current location in 10 years. Also, more than 75 percent of respondents said they supported a new downtown library along with a westside branch.

Library

A good start would be to thoroughly clean the existing library which has strong odors of ground in dirt and mildew. Books and plastic cases should be wiped down with the appropriate cleaners and dusted because they are grimy to the touch.  The dirty library speaks poorly of our capital city and shows a distinct lack of pride.

Additionally, a more open and friendly staff would be helpful.

Congratulations on looking forward to building a new library.   My suggestions would be a poor substitute to a new library, but in the meantime it would make the current library a more pleasant place.
