In keeping with a frequent holiday and post-holiday occurrence, several members of my household came down with sinus and respiratory ailments. With a bevy of over-the-counter cold remedies, eucalyptus aromatherapy, and strategically placed vaporizers, I set forth to do battle with the rampaging virus.

And virus it was. No one had a fever, sputum reports were consistently clear, all signs pointed to viral upper respiratory infection.

From past experience as a nurse, I know that rest, increased fluids, and symptomatic care with over-the-counter medications is all that can really be done for the basic viral upper respiratory infection. Antibiotics don't do anything for viral infections. See the CDC publication "If You Have a Cold or Flu, Antibiotics Won't Work For You."

I was at Group Health the other day on an unrelated matter, and I saw a waiting room full of coughing and hacking people, most of whom undoubtedly had a case of the same virus afflicting my family. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends that you should call your doctor if:

  • You continue to wheeze and cough for more than 2 weeks, especially at night or when you are active.
  • You continue to cough for more than 2 weeks and sometimes have a bad-tasting fluid come up into your mouth.
  • You have a cough, you feel very sick and weak, and you have a high fever that doesn’t go down.
  • You cough up blood.
  • You have trouble breathing when you lie down.
  • Your feet swell.
For a basic viral upper respiratory infection, however, the doctor will advise rest, increased fluids, and symptomatic care with over-the-counter medications, all things that people could initiate at home without making a trip to the doctor.

Neti Pot, Damnit!

Oprah says they work and the truth is.. they do.

They are in supply at the coop and even big box stores..

But my respiratory system has been very thankful, and I have been able to stay away from viral reach. It's just like brushing your teeth.

Yes, nasal irrigation does wonders.

I've found that simply snorting warm salt water out of my cupped hand works just fine for me. But those neti pots are neat. Just don't store it next to your tea pot.

Why?

Are they like bunnies?

just stay home!

And please, people: if you are sick or getting sick, stay home if you can! It's the best thing you can do to keep other people from getting sick.

A number of times over the last few years I've taken a "preemptive sick day" when I felt way too run down, or about to come down with something. Almost always, that's kept me from getting really sick. Just laying low for 24 hours, sleeping extra, drinking juice, watching TV.

I've had a few sinus infections (bleh!) and I like the plain saline spray when my nose/sinuses are dry and/or stuffy. It's a little tidier than snorting salt water from my hand. :)

Sadly However

Those, for whom it might be wisest to stay home when sick.. are truly unable because of financial burdens.

Typically a whole lot of those people tend to work in the food service industry, and are paycheck to paycheck. Some are single moms.. others are trying to just get by and not miss the rent payment.

Staying home is not exactly the option for those who are actually in the position where they would otherwise be in a place to stop the wide spread of infectiousness.

And nasal spray.. costs more than a Neti Pot. Get a Neti Pot and stop trying to snort salt water.. thats no way to appropriately flush your nasal cavity.

Agreed!

I totally agree about people who are unable to stay home; it's incredibly unfortunate (and makes me a little angry). I want everyone to have excellent healthcare and sick leave. But I'm always boggled by those who do have sick leave but come into work sniffling and coughing anyway. They don't get anything done, and they make everyone else sick too. As for costs -- does a Neti pot really cost less than a $2 bottle of drugstore saline spray? Really? I'm not talking about prescription anything, or an antihistamine. I get one bottle of generic saline a year, costs just a couple of bucks, and lasts me through the gnarly part of the winter. Although those neti pots do look fascinating, kinda like a genie's lamp. :)

Oh, there's no comparing a thorough nasal irrigation

with a few misty squirts of saline. A single irrigation would use up several bottles of spray.

Great advice

Personal opinion, the neti pots are useless. I've tried them several times and it seems to relieve me for about 5 minutes. Then it's back to the plugginess

Pretend you hadn't brushed your teeth for a year..

(first of all, eeew! brush your teeth!) but if you hadn't.. and then you decided to brush them once a month or so... you would feel like the whole toothbrushing thing was a simple fad.. because after eating one or two bits of stuff.. you would feel completely unaffected by the brushing.

The changes take place, like anything really after continued use.

That is all.

So how do you feel about colonics?

I think you may be breathing wrong Norm

Most people don't get respiratory infections that way. Not unless they keep their head up thier ass I suppose.

Sinus irrigation

I had a boyfriend from Germany once and his mother SWORE by sinus irrigation. I don't know what in the world she did though, because when they visited the states she didn't have a neti pot or anything. I wonder if there's a way to accomplish the same task just standing at the bathroom sink or in the shower? Anybody ever try that?
»

Yes

Use warm salt water unless you enjoy that horrible burning sensation you get when you snort cold fresh water. Snort the solution out of a shallow bowl or the cup of your hand and blow it out the other nostril. Repeat.

Gug..

Even imagining the sound of you doing that.. is really disgusting...
