1. Recently, Rush Limbaugh repeatedly used the word "spade" with special emphasis when speaking of political activity on the part of Barack Obama - "he needs to SPADE more information on the Clintons"

2. John McCain, several years back, made a comment about Chelsey Clinton, asking the rhetorical question "why is Chelsey Clinton so ugly?" His answer - Her mother is Janet Reno. This was reported in the Arizona Republic

This is the closest to the Rush quote I can find.

"I wonder how well Mrs. Clinton would hold up if the shoe was on the other foot. That is, if she had to run against an ex-president and a senator. I think she'd cry and complain about the unfairness. For all of her BS about being a victim and piling on, Obama is holding his own against both of them, doing more than his share of the "spadework," maybe even gaining ground at the moment, using not only the spade, ladies and gentlemen. But when he finishes with the spade in the garden of corruption planted by the Clintons, he turns to the hoe. So the spadework and his expertise, using a hoe. He's faring well."

This is from a transcript of the Rush Limbaugh program, read the entire transcript here.

Larry, if you have a different source will you share it?

I LISTENED to the tape

transcripts can be altered, as we all know.  He said SPADE at least 10 times in a paragraph

Can you please put the emphasis on the word SPADE, the way that Limbaugh did instead of trying to sterilize it?

FYI - the "quote" I used was not verbatim, but for the point of emphasis.

»

Huh?

Why are you asking someone to format in a particular way to be identical to your thoughts?  This is crazy!

FYI - the "quote" I used was not verbatim, but for the point of emphasis.

That's pretty funny after asking Tsch... to modify his actual quote.

»

Come on, EG....

Are we going to play ignorant on this subject?????

Read my original post about voice inflection.  Tschida responds with some sterilized version for print?

I thought we all agreed to intellectual honest in our social contract.

»

Who, me, ignorant?

Read about voice inflection?  OK, I hear read ya, but can't possibly take it seriously when you specify the word spade and in a couple of places the word was actually spadework.  A commonly used term in politics (and other professions) to describe preliminary or initial data gathering.

I'm in Copenhagen doing spadework for a potential Microsoft Online customer.

Just paste the entire quote next time.

EG

I can't believe you're defending Rush. "Spade" and "hoe." Really? You don't think "clever" Rush is having a little fun with the word play?
»

I never said anything about

I never said anything about defending Rush, did I?  It was about the ridiculous request to format text in a particular way.  I have no affinity for Rush - don't listen, don't watch, don't nothing when it comes to the man.
»

Wasn't it you Larry who suggested the transcript was altered,

Did you listen to the audio file? No clearly you didn't. Then you go on to insinuate that I am being intellectually dishonest when I refuse to spin a statement into something it clearly is not. Where do you get off suggesting that someone is being less than intellectually honest at the same time you deliberatly take something out of context to suit your agenda? How does that reconcile with any notion of integrity? Lastly, I hardly think posting a quote that is copy and pasted, associated to a linked source, and left as it is, WITHOUT EMPHASIS, is 'sterilized'. Give me a break! C.

You can listen if you like...

There is a link at the top of the page and that would resolve any question about the transcript being altered, which we all know can be done. I posted a single paragraph which puts into context the paraphrase you posted. What I won't do is spin it for you into something that it clearly is not. So much, again, for intellectual honesty I guess...

"why is Chelsey Clinton so ugly?" cuz, her mother is Janet Reno

that's funny stuff! But we all know it's untrue. Heck, I think it's likely that Janet Reno is the only gal Bill "didn't have sexual relations with......"

Would you post a photograph of yourself, please, JT?

I would like to critique your looks. It could be pretty "funny." And certainly you are better able to withstand a little ridicule over your appearance than the then-teenage Chelsea Clinton was -- although we didn't see her flinch, did we? Brave girl. She demonstrated a lot of character at a vulnerable age, and grew into a very attractive woman.

Just listen to the damn tape

Here. "Spades" and "hoes?" Oh, what a funny fat man.
»

what are you blind???

black as a spade! it's a freaking racial slur! That junkie asshole was using a RACIAL SLUR. A hateful racial SLUR. My grand father sits around every christmas shouting about the "niggers and spades" and more recently the "towel heads" an epithet i'm sure the likes of rush limbaugh has no problem with.

If you think you can come to olyblog and defend that type of behavior you've got another thing coming. you think it's funny do you JT? do you also enjoy jokes about rape? how about gas chambers? are these things funny to you? are they reconcilable? can you make an excuse for their use?

your tolerance of this kind of hatred insults the entire olyblog community.

Me thinks someone needs to take a timeout before they hit the post button.

How do we go from the alleged McCain comment to rape and gas chambers? I don't see a link.

you're right

i was referring to the rush quote
»

I didn't know a "spade" was a referrence like that

Until Rob informed me of it not all that long ago. I grew up in a family that plays A LOT of cards and I always assumed it was a card referrence. One of my favorite things to say was, "A spade is a spade." and similar sayings. rush probably knew better, but I am not certain. I think it's funny that I've made it this long without anyone pointing that out to me, maybe it's not very common knowledge.
»

Norm...

At the age of 56 - almost 57 (I expect a nice gift), I've heard that slur since I was a child.

We may be dealing with a cultural/geographical issue.  I grew up in Tacoma, you grew up in a more rural setting.

My ex-wife spent time in Kansas where "jigaboo" was an accepted term, although totally a racial slur.

»

Jigaboo?

I would have thought that was a disco term...seriously.
»

Again, geo-cultural differences

You and I could probably write a book of the differences in colloquialisms:  urban versus rural

»

I've definitely heard

I've definitely heard "jigaboo."

»

JT,

Clearly it was not a racial slur as suggested by Larry and "A future". So they make this bogus assertion, then accuse others of being hateful, accepting of hate and racism, and then make generalized statements like it insults all of Olyblog. Its a bunch of clap trap.

What is insulting to people at Olyblog is wontonly taking something out of context and then accusing someone of hate and so on. You are right that some people need to think a little harder before hitting the post button.

unless he's an idiot...

Rush (or his writers) were doing some very intentional wordplay meant to provoke precisely this sort of vaguely defensible use of the language. Who knows, this may have been an indirect salvo at the Clintons for Bill's lingual play back in the Oval office.

Regardless, I'll steal one of your plays: this says a lot about the character of Rush and his fandom.

I haven't seen such tap dancing since

And I am quite certain that Rush's

"hoe" comment was a nod to Imus.
»

I've come to realize...

While reading this thread and then hearing the tape of Ed Schultz and Bill O'Reilly's conversation on The Factor - where Bill tries to deny any serious problem with homeless veterans - that there may be an attempt to set the stage for ratings with these provocative statements.

Let's face it, Imus got lots of exposure for his "hoe" statement.  Pandering to the element can create enough chaos to activate ratings.

»

Sigh...

O'Reilly doesn't say there is no problem with homeless veterans. But you don't bother to make the distinction and offer the truth. He says that the Breck Girl is acting like a demagogue on the issue by claiming that there are "two America's", and because of these "two America's" (Neither of which seem to be voting for him!) is the root cause of the plight of homeless veterans. As for the Gug's suggestion that Rush's comments are a nod to Imus (Did anyone actually listen to this guy?) well, I don't think that in the actual context of what was said, versus Imus' "nappy headed hoe" comment, it was any kind of 'nod' to anything. But that is just my read on things. C.

It get's real old, Chris

I hear recordings from the programs and you tell me what wasn't said that I heard.

O'Reilly CHALLENGED Schultz to produce a vet "living under a bridge".  I heard it with my own ears.

By "the Breck Girl" I assume you are using a childish euphamism for John Edwards.

"O'Reilly in an interview with Ed Schultz expressed skepticism about Edwards' statement that 200,000 veterans go to sleep homeless each night."

»

Ok, I will accept your statement as truth.

I watched O'Reilly last night and he was clear about what I said about the Breck Girl. I did not hear or read his exchange with Schultz. To be clear, I do take back suggesting you were wrong. Sorry. Has Schultz produced a vet living under a bridge? Were there any caveats like substance abuse or mental illness? That would be kind of important. Lastly, any candidate who happens to be a uber-rich trial lawyer, who spends $400 on a hair cut, and has a house like the mega mansion like Mr. Edwards, and then wants to complain about how the economy is unfair and his 'two America's' will have to tolerate being called on his haircut I mentioned. Childish? No, it is funny. C.

No, Schultz has not produced a vet living under a bridge

There are none.  Bill O'Reilly said so.

Let's check the mailing address and phone numbers for bridge locations.

The truth of the matter, in typical O'Reilly fashion, is that when homeless vets were produced left and right by Schultz and listeners of his show, O'Reilly wanted proof that they LIVED UNDER BRIDGES, anything less would not qualify.  No euphamisms for Bill - unless he can call someone The Breck Girl.

By the way, a falafal IS a loofah.

"His experience with hoes?"

Yeah, right. Sadder than Rush's nasty commentary is your politicly induced deafness. And once again you make me ashamed to share this place called Olyblog with you: "Breck Girl?" I don't care what you think about policy, but you need to drop the adolescent, FreeRepublic charicatures.

Yeah Gug...

I don't buy the spin offered here and I am suffering politically induced deafness. That must be it. C.
