Press release via email:

Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles responded to a report of two people in the water in the vicinity of Steamboat Island ten miles north of Olympia, Wash., today.

A Good Samaritan called 911 and reported seeing two persons wearing life jackets and in need of assistance.

The report was then forwarded to Air Station Port Angeles, which launched an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to respond. Before the helicopter crew arrived, a Good Samaritan brought the people to shore.

Members of the Thurston County Fire Department reported that the two individuals were responsive but hypothermic.

The helicopter crew transported the individuals to St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

It was reported that the two were aboard a work barge that sank.

There is no pollution reported and the cause of the sinking has not been determined.

 God speed Coasties.

Coasties?

The Coast Guard didn't save them. It was a kayacker that saved one and a shellfish boat that saved another. Also, they weren't on a barge, they were in a 19 foot boat that had taken on water due to 6 foot swells. I know because I work with the 2 guys that almost drowned. Now I'm temporarily out of work due to a lack of a boat. But what's important is that my buddies made it out safe. And NOT because of the Coast Guard. If the 2 citizens hadn't come to their rescue, they would've died waiting for the Coast Guard. It seems that EVERY media outlet so far has gotten the story all wrong. But at least each of the stories have a happy ending! Thank you Scott Ferris for saving my friends!

Glad your buddies are safe!

I thought the Olympian gave full credit to the folks who actually did the rescue...  I know that issue sold out quick at the marina...

If I can ask though, what kind of boat got swamped by 6' swells? I've taken my 8' Livingston out in seas like that during the storm that took out Lewis County and had no problems.

I hope you can get back to work soon, and that your friends will recover swiftly. It is scary out there at times...

The Olympian ran an article

The Olympian ran an article on 07 May 2008 crediting "Ferris and the commercial fishermen on the Taylor Shellfish boat."

»

Yeah..

The Olympian was right, but it also said that they were on a 10' boat, but it was 19'. Small mistake. But the problem with the boat was that when the first waves hit, they swamped the engine. They couldn't get it started again and thus were sitting ducks. The boat took on too much water and it sank. Anyway, thanks again to Ferris and the folks from Taylor for helping my friends.

Ahh....

I figured either a swamped engine or travelling too fast for the conditions.  Good lesson in wearing floatation devices and protective gear.
