The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s current TV program – “VENEZUELA: AN UPDATE” – is airing twice a week throughout January on Thurston Community Television (TCTV), cable channel 22 in Thurston County. You can watch it every Thursday at 9:00 p.m. and every Monday at 1:30 p.m. throughout the entire month.

This fresh and informative program is summarized here:

A lot has happened since the Olympia FOR’s December 2005 TCTV program on Venezuela. We’re happy to provide fresh information now, which is especially needed to counter the distorted propaganda flowing from the U.S. government and mainstream news media.

Although the U.S. has long dominated Latin America politically and economically, Latin American people and nations are increasingly resisting that domination. Latin Americans are electing populists who want their nations’ economic resources and policies to benefit their people rather than U.S. corporations. Latin American nations are collaborating among themselves – and shunning U.S. interference – to promote healthy economies.

Venezuela is one of the world’s major producers of oil. President Hugo Chavez has been using Venezuela’s oil wealth to fund health, social and educational services for the Venezuelan people.

Under Chavez, Venezuela has moved toward Socialism in a number of practical, humane ways and also in explicit public statements and policies.

For these and other reasons, the Bush regime has been demonizing Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez, spreading “disinformation” (deliberately false and/or misleading propaganda), and trying to overthrow Venezuela’s government.

Our guests – John Regan and Anne Fischel – have solid knowledge and first-hand experience in Venezuela, including several recent trips. John was a guest on our December 2005 TCTV program. Anne teaches at The Evergreen State College in Olympia.

Our guests will help us understand Venezuela and related issues. They’ll also help us understand Venezuela’s elections, economic and environmental issues, popular media, and grassroots social and political realities.

This program is a great opportunity to learn about the information that the U.S. government and mainstream news media don’t want us to know. Be sure to tune in!

Chavez has moved towards dictatorship in the...

sheeps clothing of socialism. Perhaps Venezuela is a great place to be if you are an America hating gravel for brain dunce who likes the government to take over private property, toss opposistion in jail and just for fun lets throw in take over the press. Mr. Whitlock, do you support the suppression of the press by the government? That is what is happening in Venezuela. Do you think that opposition to government should result in jail time? Do you think the government should be permitted to take private property, as it sees fit? Is this really the kind of government you wish to demonstrate support for, regarless of your thoughts on our own current federal government? C.

One of the great non sequiturs of the left is that, if the free market doesn't work perfectly, then it doesn't work at all-- and the government should step in.

Wow!

When did you become so concerned about dictatorships in Latin America? Kind of late to the trough, eh?

No.

Unwilling to anwser the first question I guess.

That's okay. It's pretty obvious to any but the least informed.

What does it matte when I became 'concerned'?

Are you feelings hurt because I thought your question was presumptuous and beneath notice? Sorry. C.

Tschida,

Settle down a little. Mr. Whitlock reposted a press release from the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation. Docents are sent things for publication from time to time and it doesn't mean it's their point of view.

It matters because it is quite clear that you are not

really concerned about dictatorships. I can understand why you are afraid to admit that.
»

Why would you presuem to know that about me?

Just what would make you say something about me like that? I have never met you, you don't take the time to actually find out what I think usually, you just assume as you have done here, so where is it exactly you get this notion? C.

You reveal youself in everything you post

and don't post. Like your deep concerns about the dictatorships of Muhammad Hosni Said Mubarak, Pervez Musharraf, or Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud. You politics allows you to ignore people like Alfredo Stroessner Matiauda, Somoza, Battalion 316, José Efraín Ríos Montt, Augusto José Ramón Pinochet, etc. Don't play coy with me Tsch.

Since I reveal my self in my posts...

Would you care to share my thoughts on Al Saud? How about Musharraf? What do I think of these guys? So, like I said before, your comment was beneath notice and you would have done well to leave it there. Do I post glowing updates on these nations? Do I say that "[Such and such a nation] has moved toward Socialism [or any other repressive form of government] in a number of practical, humane ways and also in explicit public statements and policies." Do I gush about the self appointed dictators? No, I don't do I? So much for intellectual honesty and the speech code! C.

Sorry Tsch

You're right. I did put words in your mouth. I shouldn't criticize you for what you don't say.

Ummm

What do latin american dictatorships have to do with Olympia directly?  Seems what is "on topic" is important of late....  of course I do believe this is a topic dear to progressives so I would imagine it is much more acceptable.  Rick, can you help people set up a blog to discuss south american dictatorships too?

Ha, ha!

Ha, ha!

The post is about an event in Olympia.

Sure

But it is also diverging into discussions about dictatorships.  I see a lot of posts about things that are not taking place in Olympia, presidential primaries, etc...  Anyway if I go on this thread will be hijacked...

Hey, or you could just move

Hey, or you could just move there and learn everything you ever wanted to know - including the truth.  Something tells me you won't get it at this event.
