Video documentation of unsafe crosswalk conditions in Olympia, WA.

Here is a very dangerous pedestrian crossing area at the corners of
4th & Chestnut St. (across from the Capitol Playhouse)

Notice the impaired pedestrian field of view and the traffic accident
that almost happens when the speeding drivers finally stop for the
cameraperson and child. (a very dangerous place to cross)

More video footage of unsafe pedestrian crossing conditions found
in Olympia can be seen at the Olympia Traffic Watch blog.

Thank you for taking this problem on...

As a frequent pedestrian, I have noticed many areas where the crosswalks are completely ignored.  Another couple of problem areas are on Capitol Way, where nobody will yield to pedestrians unless they launch themselves out into the street.  Also, there are several crosswalks on Plum St between Legion and Union that are really problematic.  I applaud your efforts!

thanks agatha..

Can you give me a list of the intersections you are talking about. Ill go out and film them.

Its very dangerous work crossing the streets of Olympia, as a pedestrian, to get this footage, but I know it just has to be done..

(crossing the street, that is..)

More work

I am working as a temp. summer worker for the Signs and Markings department of the city. We are about to start restriping crosswalks, so if you want you should call our department at the Public Works building and talk to my supervisor ask for either Rick or Ron tell them which streets are problems and what other places you think might need new crosswalks installed and hopefully they will add it to the schedule for this summer. I think what your doing is great, I travel mainly by sidewalks and understand where your coming from. Keep shooting!

Thanks Oyster..

My time is usually too slim to make those calls. Can you hook me (us) up with an email address?

Also, like I told Agatha: let me know of any unsafe pedestrian crossing locations, and I will film and post them.

Residents of Olympia need to be aware of these hazards.

Keeping my eye out

I will definitely inform you on unsafe crossing locations. I completely agree that people need to be informed. Off the top of my head, I am not a fan of crossing anywhere  between  franklin and Plum on 4th St. It's like as soon as people get past the railroad tracks they think  there back on the free way. Your video did a great job of showing that people just don't want to stop.

I think if Olympia keeps growing then people are going to have to start to clean up the east side of downtown and we'll start to see more of the lighted crosswalks and bump outs.

The best email address to use is Publicworks@ci.olympia.wa.us, they do a good job of sending things to the right person. Also that way more people will see it, so it will have less of a chance of falling through the cracks. Not that it would, right.
