Volunteer Workparty on Friday at the Garfield Nature Trail

Come join WSU Native Plant Salvage Project on Friday, March 5th from 1-5pm at the Garfield Nature Trail for an afternoon of restoration work. Please contact us to attend: nativeplantsalvage@gmail.com or 360-867-2166

For the past few years we have been working to remove the invasive species english ivy from the trail and replanting with native species as part of a 20+ year neighborhood effort to restore the ecology of the park. On friday we will be placing cedar logs (Donated by the City of Olympia) along the steep slopes to stabilize the hillsides as well as freeing trees of ivy using a technique called "life rings" where the vertically-growing ivy is removed from the tree and the surrounding ivy is pulled back and away in a ring around the tree. Bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and dress for the weather. We'll provide tools, gloves, snacks, water, and plenty of ivy to pull!

This is part of our preperation work for our Arbor day Event, which will be a celebration and tree planting at the Garfield Nature Trail on March 27th. (For directions and other details, click on "read more" below)

The trail is on the westside of Olympia with entrances on Rogers st. NW and West Bay Drive. Here is a Google map of the trail (with the rogers st. entrance marked). We'll be working right at the West Bay Drive entrance, but there isn't any parking there so if you are driving I would recommend parking at the Rogers entrance then walking down the trail to the west bay side. If you are being dropped off however, there is a small pullout at the West bay entrance. If you are on bike, you can lock up at the West Bay Drive entrance. If you are on bus, the 45 goes past the Rogers entrance, or you can take the 41, 45, 47, 48, and 49 buses to the roundabout at Harrison and West Bay drive and walk about 10 bocks to the trailhead.
