Well, crap. There goes my number one pick. From an email this morning:

January 2, 2008

Olympia City Council
900 Plum Street
Olympia, WA 98501

Dear Councilmembers,

After much thoughtful consideration, I have decided to withdraw my application for the open Council position. My work and volunteer obligations along with my family commitments are such that, if appointed, I wouldn’t be able to dedicate my full attention to the council’s important work.

I’d like to thank each one of you for the efforts you put forth on behalf of this great city. I hope to have the opportunity to serve alongside you in the future.

Sincerely,
Danielle Westbrook

Doug Mah's response:

Danielle -

Thank you for making the time to apply for the open council position. I recognize that it was no small decision to apply and it was equally significant decision to withdraw. I look forward to working with you in the future and for new opportunities to appreciate your numerous professional and community strengths. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss. Again, thank you for submitting a thoughtful application and for expressing such a strong interest to work for your community.

- Doug

UPDATE: By the way, Westbrook had been leading the voting on the poll, six votes overall to four for James Reddick. Results here, and if you want to vote, go here

my number one pick also

This seems like a pretty generic letter, I wonder if there was some backroom wheeling and dealing behind this decision. If she had said, "To spend more time with my family." That would have been the dealbreaker for me. I should maybe not have watched so much "West Wing" in my impressionable teenage years.

my one complaint about Danielle

Is that she plays in a band and that she can always say "Oh, I have band practice." So, I doubt she was making up excuses (she does have a young family as well), but I'm wondering if she runs in a couple of years. I think of all of the folks applying, she'd make the best candidate.

I agree,

the best out of this bunch for sure.

Harmful Influence of TV

I just want to say that TV - even shows that seem to demonstrate some form of positive values and altruism - is often times a harmful influence on the individual as well as society.
