I'm surprised I'm just now hearing about this (via email):

At the Tuesday July 2nd Health Care forum in the Olympia Community Center, the Olympian newspaper and the Olympia police department jointly violated the 1st Amendment by excluding people handing out leaflets or carrying signs from the hallways of the Olympia center -- a public building in which the Olympian had rented rooms, but not the entire facility. As an 85 year old woman, I was one of the people prevented from handing out brochures inside the building.

This Tuesday the Olympia City Council will clarify whether it is public policy in Olympia to honor free speech rights of the people on the people's property. What we want to make sure of is that no new policy is passed caging free speech rights into small "free speech zones", and excluding from everywhere outside those small obscure zones.  From what I understand, the city is considering requiring public events renting city facilities to offer a literature table where anyone may place information.
...
The central question for me is whether this sort of activity (handing out leaflets) would have been allowed during the rest of the day, but prevented because of this particular event (a health care forum hosted by the Olympian and featuring our state's senators).

A quick look at the council's agenda for Tuesday night doesn't show anything relating to the above, but that doesn't mean folks can show up and ask the council for a little light on the subject.

Good questions, and how about Lakefair?

Good questions on the First Amendment. I'd pose what should be another obvious question: How is it The Olympian, the alledged community champion of all things First Amendment, at least when it applies to the McLatchy Corp's interests, is involved with the interference of our rights?

And then there's Lakefair. Apparently, individuals in years past have been stopped from distributing literature in and around Lakefair events, including along the parade route, all on public ground.

Questions. So many questions.

As someone with recent experience

I can comfortably say that The Olympian (owned by McClatchy) has a rather interesting take on First Amendment issues. It seems that they retain the right to speak their minds and attempt to stop others from doing the same, based on "ownership".

Now, I will be the first to say that they own the newspaper they print on and own their website, thus they do retain control of such. But when their publisher takes exception to Cal Thomas' editorial in his own product (link) then defends a cartoonist that offended thousands of Muslim readers (link), one starts finding some hypocrisy, unless of course both sides of the coin only applies to his newspaper.

In my world, either you stand by what you say or you don't. If you defend a man's right to offend, in the name of freedom, then you allow all to offend in the name of the same freedom. Anything else is just talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Since Cal Thomas is still published most Sundays in The Olympian, it appears that everyone kissed and made up - unless of course, bigger issues, like money and syndicates, came to the table. Of course, it could be that Cal doesn't read The Olympian.
