Several readers of The Olympian have erupted into complaints and alleged calls to advertisers because of video coverage on their internet site of the finding of the body of the woman in Rochester.  Vickie Kilgore explains that this was a calculated decision on the part of the editors.

An irony comes to mind about a media that claims to be sensitive to readers being upset with content from other readers but can justify their upsetting the readers with THEIR content.  I understand that they own the paper on which you print and the website, but they don't own the readers' minds.

It will be interesting to watch this play out.  The power of the press versus the power of the people?

The outcry seems to have

The outcry seems to have died down almost completely as of today. It usually happens that way. The controversies in Olympia never last longer than a few days at a time. Fortunately for the local media, there's always a new one waiting in the wings. People pay the most attention to what's going on in the news when the content of the news or the method in its delivery are controversial.

On an unrelated note, I find it interesting that you closed the other thread. Did I hit a nerve? You've certainly gone wildly off topic on a number of occasions. Seems to me that you just didn't want to deal with the consequences of the can of worms you're opening here by "critiquing" The Olympian, as you put it. For someone who claims to never back down, you sure bowed out of that one pretty quick.

Sincerely, Frederick

Fred,

If I felt that you had made a point worth arguing, I would have defended my position.  All I saw is lots of conjecture, subjective statements and your position that you "don't like me".

I don't mind that you don't like me and won't try to change your mind.

Meanwhile, if you feel the need, start a blog of your own on your positions concerning The Olympian, or your positions concerning your opinons of me, or whatever makes you feel best.

It's not that I don't like

It's not that I don't like you. Quite the contrary. I get a kick out of a lot of the things that you say. I'm just curious as to why you think that it's "ok" for you to post a lot of conjecture about The Olympian and its employees but you have a problem if someone comes after you a bit.

Sincerely, Frederick

Blog on, Fredrick.

I keep waiting for your critique of something I'm really doing, as opposed to subjective thoughts about this and that without so much as one item of fact posted.

Copy and paste one of my blogs and critique me.  That is basically what I'm doing to The Olympian.

Let's move beyond the color of my underwear or my favorite food.

Where's the beef?

I do have to wonder "why?".

I do have to wonder "why?". I realize it was to scoop everyeone or whatever, but why post a video of finding a dead body? I haven't seen the video so maybe it isn't that dramatic but still. If I were this woman's family I'd take a walk down to the Olympian building and ask to see the editor. Probably so I could see how many times I could hit him, but I'd still ask.

A little "man bites dog"

No one knows, Norm, why The Olympian would choose to publish that video, considering that the contention was that it didn't show anything in particular.  Either it was really news, or it's not.  Frankly, I haven't watched it as I don't follow "tabloid" style news.

You know the old saying - "man bites dog makes for more news than dog bites man".
