I came across this news article in my scan of the news this morning. In it we find that if you insult Islam in the wrong place you will find yourself in court fighting for your life.

The effect this had on me was to appreciate our nation and culture for allowing all points of view, and the freedom to

express these views, with out fear.

Afghan journalist sentenced to death

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080123/ap_on_re_as/afghan_journalist_death_penalty

"KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan journalist sentenced to death for distributing an article that allegedly violated Islam is actually being punished for reporting by his brother about abuses by northern warlords, a media group said Wednesday."

Larry,

Do you see a difference between a fringe lunatic group like 'army of god' and a government trying a journalist under the threat of death for writing a news article? Do you think this is a bit of a non sequitur? C.

One of the great non sequiturs of the left is that, if the free market doesn't work perfectly, then it doesn't work at all-- and the government should step in.

The day ain't over yet.....LOL

I agree 100% with Tschida.  Religious radicalism is a problem.  We are seeing the results of it in our "Christian nation".

Sounds to me like the problem is with their legal system.

That's what happens when you mix religion and politics. Keep religion out of politics and lots of problems go away.  Of course, I'm not sure that it's our job to tell every country how to live.  I wonder how we would feel if Iran demanded that we live their way?  Interesting question, huh?  We've got people running around saying "nuke 'em" because they got a boat too close to our ship in their waters.

Remember the good old days of the Ku Klux Klan, slavery, civil rights and such?  Remember when African Americans were killed, burned, hung and slaughtered because of wanting their right to vote?  Right here is the good old USA?

Now, you respond that there were not nearly as many African Americans killed as there were/are people killed by Islam, then I'll bring up the Crusades....yadda yadda yadda.

mix of religion & politics

I do not remember the "good old days", but I do remember growing up with the thoughtlessness of white-on-white violence in rural Washington-- (really, it was anything-on-anything violence, a sort of crazed futility that underpinned our angsty youth in the PacNW).

So, although this is so not an Olympia dealie--

--I wonder what would happen if folks that feel strongly about ecological principals (almost like a religion) took over (politically) a nation like the US? I wonder if that would engender violent hate?

--the real issue is not nation + religion, the real issue is intolerance and fundamentalism at the individual level, isn't it? Nation-states and religions just amplify personal traits, however dis-jointed.

Ok, but lets keep our conversation to the last say 50 years...

I think then your argument falls to bits. Further I have to wonder why you think the crusades were so bad, from a Christian perspective. I don't think it balances out when it comes to the things done by the Islamic warriors of the time, but for some reason I don't understand you seem to ignore this fact. It doesn't excuse the things done by the Christians, but it certainly provides some context. C.
