I am either going to build a quad core system or buy a new laptop. Since my Dell laptop died I have been using this old "thing" A Compaq Presario 1247 with an AMD K6-2 processor, 4gb hd, 156mb RAM (8mb of which is video memory) Gentoo Linux with Afterstep window manager, and Firefox or Lynx web browsers. I get online with a USB Linksys Wireless G device. Since I use this "thing" only to get online I don't have anything else installed on it. Next machine will have Gentoo as well, and some sort of 3-D desktop enviroment. What is amazing is that "The Thing" actually does almost everything I want to do online pretty good. Generally I read Olyblog, a couple of other webpages like OpenCarry.org or slashdot.org check my email, and some research. Also I have a plugin for firefox that blocks nearly ad in webpages. Even The Olympian's website now comes up for me ad free! All in all not bad for some old POS computer I rescued from the trash.

AMD???
Submitted by JstPlnOnry on Sun, 02/03/2008 - 10:16pm.Why?
Submitted by security_six on Sun, 02/03/2008 - 10:20pm.It's not like I went out and bought this thing new anyhow. It's around 9 years old and was a low end system in it's day. Besides, I like AMD :-) Although if I build a new system it will have an Intel Quad Core.
I should also mention that a good 70% of the software work on this machine was done by a friend who knows way more about Linux than I do, but it has been a great learning tool.

Submitted by chad360 on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 9:39am.Hola OlyBlog Posse,
I have a MacBook, and it is OK..I'm working on getting software for it from Techsoup.
Anyone that wants a good deal on a computer, I'd be happy to show you how to build-em yourself.
I shop NewEgg for deals on parts and then make a box-
I like both AMD & Intel, but prefer super low-voltage/low-wattage gear like at mini-itx.com
I'd love to incorporate a computer build&take party or "tune-up" into one of the OlyBlog posse-ups...get everyone's computers humming along and maybe even try some fun games.
Anyways, when I'm in the market for a new box I check what is up in OS land...today is a Vista SR1, but I also like the old XP, as well as Linux--
The trick is getting a good "boot loader" so that you can have 3-4 different OSes "onboard"-- VMware rocks!
I'm a big fan of external SATA harddrives (eSATA HDD), and always have at least 4x 1GB RAM for "workstations".
ATI has a new "dual-GPU" videocard that looks cool, so I suggest gettn a good vid card and lots of RAM- Using two drives for C: also helps speed things up (C: in RAID).
I'd hesitate to build an Intel quad-core($!) --the AMD's eat it's lunch during loads, rendering, and boot...Linux lessens the difference between rigs, but M$ has a wide variety of responses to components, so it can be frustrating for someone that has little experience with computers to get what they want even if they buy all the right parts. Dual CPU and/or multi-core are OK, but price-per-performace, I'd look "both ways" b4 crossing the street into Quad-Core land.
I'm not disn M$ or Apple/Mac--
>all in all, Apple & M$ have some good stuff, and at this point I'm siding towards either Apple with Windows or Windows & Linux<
--but Linux does rock.
I'd look also at the HP line-up...very cool micro-atx systems for cheap!
So, anyone that wants to talk computers or build computers or stuff like that, let's break-out a thread and help each other out!
Hmm...
Submitted by security_six on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 11:44am.I haven't looked hard enough at quad core systems and differences yet to firmly make up my mind... I may just buy a mobo with quad core support and put in a good dual core. The problem is at least with intel, I can buy a pretty nice dual core, or spend $100 more and get a lower end quad...
I use grub as my boot loader and had one machine booting XP, and two different Linux variants on it, worked good for me.
Since I live on a small sailboat, space is a restriction hence either a laptop or something living inside a small desktop case...

Onry- I apologize, but I will never go back to Intel. AMD is top dog imo.
S6- Go AMD......you will never look back....but something bigger than a K6 ok?

Submitted by Norm on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 8:17pm.How well does the processor hold up during a video game? Since the invent of the Athlon, AMD has been at the top. I've built a few systems in my time, a few intel, but once I tried AMD I haven't gone back. Here's an older article for everyone, and a quick snap of the benchmark graph

Submitted by Guglielmo on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 10:32pm.I really have no idea what is in my computer!
Submitted by The Original Yoda on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 11:04pm.I think my wife bought it a few years ago. It's a PC of some kind. I seem to be ale to keep it healthy with spybot and adaware.
I don't ask it to do much and it never seems to complain. It is pretty slow to load and use Photoshop CS2. I probably need to update it.
This is the last computer I owned:

Submitted by Phil Owen on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 11:36pm.with Intel centrino.
It still suits my needs, but in another year I'm hoping I'll be able to afford a new one. Trouble is, I use Indesign and Photoshop (still on CS2) a lot for my work (I do a lot of volunteer recruitment, need posters and flyers), and this computer seems to get bogged down when I run both at the same time.
I really like having a laptop. It's my most important work tool, and also my entertainment center! We (Meta and I) don't own a TV or big stereo or anything jazzy like that, so we watch movies on the computer, listen to music on the computer, blog on the computer, read the news on the computer, work for a living on the computer... an all-in-one kinda deal.

AMD Athlon on an MSI K8 motherboard
Submitted by Mike on Tue, 02/05/2008 - 8:26am.build all my own computers, maintain the network here at home (four computers) and at one of the offices (four computers) where I work. I built all but one of these 8 computers that I support. I only use AMD Athlons. I am partial to MSI and ASUS motherboards.
I like the AMD because I think it produces less heat (lower power consumption?) than a comparable Intel chip. Sorry, Mr. Onry, I am not an intel guy.
