Updated, 5:57 a.m., good catch Dylan.

I'm going to spend the next few months looking through the sweat (oh, so sweat) precinct level data that the auditor put up on the election. First little look was to see how many precincts Meta won, which is three.

Olympia 18, Olympia 20 and Olympia 44 where the three that Meta took. There were several others that were close, but the vast majority (as you can imagine) were very not close.

Two precincts follow 4th and State up the east side hill, one is on the westside:

I kind of used to live near all of these precincts at one time or another, but I don't really know that much about these neighborhoods to really know why they were Meta's only three. Any ideas?

»

Because

She has no experience in government, and buys cigarettes with campaign money?

»

Sheesh!

So, I am hereby handing you my crown with the inscription, "Official Asshole of Olyblog"

Keep it up and you will take the "Official Olyblog Douche-bag" title as well. I'm not sure who is keeping it, but you don't want to know what you have to wear with that one :)

»

Thank you

I have been a bit of a dick tonight haven't I?

The fact she took two neighborhoods next to each other either is a coincidence of like minded people living nearby, good campaigning on her part, or just a weird freaky conspiracy.  Personally, I didn't think she had a snowball's chance of winning.  Too young, comes out of the blue, and no prior experience, excepting running a shelter.

I could go on but....  the crown is a bit heavy.

»

She never ran a shelter.

Her job was as a coordinator of transitional women's housing. Not a shelter. Running a shelter just plain never happened. There fore the statement is inaccurate.

Thank you for clarifying that.

Certainly

Most certainly Rupert.

Close enough....

But I guess at this point all you can do is split hairs about why she lost...
»

Not Really...

She lost.. by alot. She used campaign fundung as her personal income.. and remains unemployed. This thread is to shows Meta supprters (how do you say that in a past tense?) that they all live close together.

If there is to be another pity party .. then noone has to walk far (at least not more than six miles).

I thought I was the OlyBlog

I thought I was the OlyBlog Asshole!

Anyways...Meta's purchases were explained long ago plus she paid it all back. Plus those exact same purchases would have been 100% legal had she merely itemized it under a different heading. She was naive (did I even spell that right?) not malicious. Anyone still dwelling on it has a chip on their shoulder and should get over it.

Please give me a second grace. Please give me a second face. I've fallen far down, the first time around, now I just sit on the ground in your way.

You sure are flingin poo tonight.

But to shed light on the original question, these are (to oversimplify) far left districts, and they are far left because SOME districts have got to be furthest left on the bell curve. I used to canvass for WashPIRG and other orgs, and the people in these two districts give so much to so many different progressive orgs, it's actually a problem when you knock on their door asking for yet another donation. I live in this area, too, and I saw more Meta signs per capita than anywhere else, so it's not surprising, but very cool, that you mapped this.
»

By the way, the proximity of these districts to Ralph's

may explain why that store has lost so much money since they refused to stock Plan B.
»

Good call Deb

I didn't think of that. I know it's a progressive neighborhood, and I know that's what made the boycott such a success.
»

well, for one thing...

...I'd say that socio-economic factors would play an influence in why Meta got or didn't get these two units/and or the rest as well--

...and that is me trying to respect the manner in which I suspect Emmett posted this map breakdown, which I find cool & interesting: I totally respect that.

> I'm not sure where Norm's comment fits in, but since I am such a lurking troll here, I figure it is just one of those wacky OlyBlog insider jokes...but it sure comes off as rank--

BUT DAMN! I agree with Norm >> what is up with the 'tude (attitude) here security_six?

Jus curious if you could post on your blog and reference this post here tonight (your post on this thread), and explain where you are at? I'm seriously not trying to bait you, jus tryn to figure out if this is yor take on OK dialog, or your sense of humor not translating well--

cheers security_six...

Now on to a proper response (which is what winter blogging is all about),

Maybe folks in that area have access to free WiFi, and go online for OlyBlog, and perhaps become influenced to vote (wouldn't that be great...what are the voter stats for OlyBlog users...how do we stack-up as a demographic compared to say Lacey >grin<).

So, wearing my community developer hat, I'd say the best thing for a canidate to do would be to coordinate the deveopment of a wifi network to mobilze voters in a small city like Oly-

Hard to deny that someone that could do that would be a political powerhouse in this sleepy little self-rightoues burg we all so lovingly call Olympia...I mean to some extent that I'd rather starve this muni for funding than let it pay our cops to protect DoD cargo, OK? is that so out ofg line >sedition<

It is cool to put the Meta data on a map.

--that is a bad GIS joke for those of you in the studio audience--

Emmett, care to share what your criteria for analysis is for the next step?

»

Meta's voters are in the wrong 'hood.

I have a feeling that Meta had a lot of support out here. (For better or for worse, those folks don't get to pick Olympia's mayor.)

»

I can't open PDF's right

I can't open PDF's right now, they shut down my browser. Can somebody tell me what this link is to?
»

Rob, the pdf is a map file

Rob, the pdf is a map file of veter precinct 129, essentially all of TESC and the majority of evergreen pkwy, and driftwood road.
»

So Dylan

What are you saying?
»

I'm saying....

I'm saying that:

  • Meta had a lot of support from the Evergreen community.
  • Many Evergreen students live Northwest of the Olympia city limits.
That's all. Seriously, that's all.
»

You Missed One

Emmett, you missed one precinct. Meta also won Olympia 44.

Oly 44 shares a similar socio-economic theme with the other two precincts that Meta won.

(Disclaimer: I am the Democratic PCO for Olympia 44. I did not canvas for either candidate for Mayor.)

»

Well,

You were a busy boy making up all those points from the primary. Good job by the way, and congratulations.
»

Thanks Dylan

I changed the post this morning, but didn't get a chance to thank you for pointing that out. I'm the PCO for Oly 48, by the way. I wonder how many other PCOs we have here.
»

That's my hood!

Upper East Side! NE Oly represent!

Maybe the yard sign helped.

»

here here

here here
»

Yard signs a-plenty

I live in one of those neighborhoods and I'm not surprised that she won those precincts. There was a lot of verbal and visual support (i.e. yard signs) for her.
»

Must have been MY yard sign

that did it.
»

Where Meta's voters "were"

and still are. Thanks for the maps emmett.
»

I thought a bit about what

I thought a bit about what tense to use. I used "where" because they had voted, and once there votes were submitted and then counted, they stopped being voters for her. Still voters in general, but in terms of their ballot support of her, that finished with the counting. I know, very long line of thinking, but when you're drawing lines on a google map, your mind wanders...
»

Maybe that is the

Maybe that is the neighborhood where everyone in the "Bath salts and smokes for everyone!" lobby lives.

Actually, a lot of cool older folks live in that neighborhood

including me. They're pretty involved in their community and would probably be pretty damn nice to you if you ever met them.

I know lots of nice folks

I know lots of nice folks live there, I was born in that neighborhood. Just thought I was being funny. Sheesh

Guglielmo

I am sorry if I offended you and your neighbors. I know the popularity of bath salts in that neighborhood is low, I won't make that mistake again....I'm killing myself here, I can't stand it!! I should be on Leno!

maybe not Leno...

as much as the olympian comments.

Oh geez, lighten up. I love laughing, dont you? It's just fun, try it. If you learn to laugh at yourself life is really fun.

Help Onry!!

I'm new to this and have a few questions... 1) Is humor bad on this blog? 2)Or is it only good to laugh at people the majority of folks here diagree with? 3) What are the sacred things that can't be laughed at?
»

Speaking From Experience

) Is humor bad on this blog? ~ It depends on if what you find funny is found funny by the majority.  Trying to make light of something or see the humor in it doesn't appear to be acceptable in most situations.

2)Or is it only good to laugh at people the majority of folks here diagree with? ~ Yeah, that seems to be safe for now at least until the 'Dog House' is implemented.

3) What are the sacred things that can't be laughed at? ~ Instead of a long list that's proven to be fatal, it's just easier to say nothing is fair game apparently!

»

Thank you!

For the information. I have always liked this neighborhood. Some really cool older homes.
