Why not love?

   There are children in Afghanistan who have lived with war, corruption, forced migration and death all around them since they were born. Some of them are now teens. Some of them as young as 9 years old. Many of the male adults in their lives are dead. Killed by the British, Soviets, Americans or their own warlords. They continue to ask, "Why?"  No one answers.

    And in our American smugness we gather to sing "Oh Holy Night", "Silent Night", and songs with similar words and themes. While we continue to bomb the hell out of innocent civilian populations around the world.  But, hey, it's not in our backyard, right? So, let's just go buy the latest gadget and forget about drones killing people in the middle of the night.  Let's just grab a cup of something hot & spicy while our military continues to try to figure out what the hell they are doing, day after day after year after year. Lets not fret that the children are not our children, after all they live in a god-forsaken corner of the world. Let someone else care. We're busy shopping.

    "Peace on earth, goodwill toward men."  Maybe you'll pardon me if I don't get all choked up with sentimentality.  That could be a nice song if people were sincere when they sang it. But too often these days it is merely trying to drown out the news of Americans killing people and lying about it. (Don't give me that 'war' crap right now. Can't you see I'm trying to celebrate Christmas - the birth day of Jesus Christ?).

    You want the number of the boys in Afghanistan, so you can call them and wish them a Merry Christmas?  Better hurry. More soldiers, drones and tanks are on the way.

   Governments, and not just ours, run by virtue of the will of the people. You and me and all the rest. Are you getting the biggest bang you can get for your bucks?

Actually a lot you have to say is true. Keep in mind, your ability to speak freely and critical of our country is being brought to you by killing all those people.  Someone has to be on top of the hill. It may not be for very long (Hitler) or it might be for a long time (roman empire). But someone is going to be at the top. Right now that us.  I would go one step further. Those assholes that compete in the Smart Oil or Energy bicycle commuter contest during the warm month of May are soaking in the fantasy that they are actually having some affect on the environment.  Duh, let's see.  We saved so many billions of tons of carbon by riding our bikes this year.  No we didn't.  That is as if to say by not being huge polluters of carbon we are actually saving it.  Well give me a break. Look at all those seniors living in their assisted living apartments, bedridden. They've saved thousands more carbon than those idiots riding their bikes.  But I digress.  While we are here congratulating ourselves for doing our thing to stop global warming, while a volcano blows off on the other side of the earth, undoing anything we thought we even did.... While this is going on, lots of people are dying and starving and malnourished in other parts of the  world.  Sadly, this will always be.  There will always be poor, starving, malnourished people.  Get rid of the drones and bombs and killer troops and these people won't all of a sudden become healthy.  Just more of them won't be dying by a bullet or explosion to compete with other malnourished people for the same resources available.  No, to make any kind of difference at all. We must give up our food, get rid of all our Costcos and give all that food away to the starving. That way WE become the starved ones instead.

It's not just angst.

I believe the implication here is that if you take away Bob Cratchitt's turkey, you resolve a little bit of his complicity in British imperialism.

  I don't care for hypocrites.  Or as they used to be known, liars.  Now if they were working for peace in spite of the reality of war, that would be a different thing completely. Too many I have met want to spout Merry Christmas out of one side of their mouth and Kill! Kill! Kill! out the other.

  And that is why all those supposed 'diplomats' are out for blood because WIKILEAKS showed them up for the hypocrites they are. And are they all falling all over themselves to give Assange the freedom to speak critically? Not hardly. Not even the freedom to speak the truth.  So obviously that isn't the reason. Now maybe if he was American they might say, 'Oh, okay, we're killing people in Iraq and Afghanistan so you can continue. But it's a good thing you aren't French or Swiss or something, 'cause then we would care.'

   And you want me to believe that Iraqis or Afganis or Yemenis or Pakistanis are trying to take away our freedoms?
